Would it be uncomfortable to wear pants year round in Honolulu?
willnyu1982 asked:
I’ll be moving there from NYC and will have to most likely wear pants when I’m at school/work. Is the weather mild enough to make that tolerable? It seems like 70s-80s year round, which from my experience is not too bad. Obviously when I’m not in school or at work its shorts.

Lots of people wear pants year round in Hawaii and of course lots wear shorts too. Just make sure the pants you wear are the lightweight kind and not jeans made of heavy denim. Cotton or silk is best to wear in Hawaii, also linen except it wrinkles bad.

Pants are definitely doable here in Hawaii! Most men you see in Downtown Honolulu wear slacks, Dockers-type. Lots of guys wear jeans. Lots of women wear pants, too.

You can wear pants, but I definitely agree with the advice to have some in light weight fabrics. Cotton and microfiber are good choices for the summer.

I’m sure you’ll be fine. When you are in class you will be in air conditioning so you should be fine and when you’re at work, everyone else will be wearing pants too so it won’t be bad at all.
We may live out here in the middle of the Pacific Ocean but we wear the same business attire as the rest of the US (except our guys wear aloha shirts instead of coats and ties)!
Good luck!

You do what you have to do. It may be uncomfortable at first but you get used to anything. Just make them light-weight, loose fitting and comfortable~~Aloha~~

If you’re in an area with A/C you can even wear something as heavy as corduroys. After a year or so, you acclimate and won’t feel uncomfortable except when it gets really humid a few times a year.
Lighter is definitely better as mentioned. Lightweight shirts (you will have a choice of a thousand Aloha shirts) and short hair helps stay cool too.
For school, most students wear shorts. Teachers are casual, jeans in many cases.

In school you may be able to wear shorts as well, unless you are teaching. I’d check to see what the dress code is for the university or school.
Many men and women wear pants year round, so you won’t stick out nor should you be too uncomfortable. If you opt for lightweight fabrics you will be fine. Linen, cotton, etc. Females also have the option of cropped pants, which at least offer a little bit more flexibility (they can be dressed up or down).
Congrats on your move to Honolulu. No matter what you end up wearing, it’s going to be more comfortable than NYC in January!
