Ideally rent a room from people that have a deck, grill, and like to hang-out.

All the rentals are either in the newspapers. Honolulu Star Bulletin or the Honolulu Advertiser – you can look at their websites. Or, another common place you can look at is

They also have large condos you can rent. Check out one of the timeshare companies like RCI or try. We rented a three bedroom two bath condo and there was a cookout area and a small deck and lots of people to hang out with around the pool. Some of them have bands on Saturdays and activities.

By far the best site for rentals is “Vacation Rentals By Owners” vrbo.com. The have hundreds of listings, many of which are at brand name resorts for much less than the going rack rates. Compare and see, I am sure you will find what you are looking for. We always find something to our liking when visiting the islands, or anywhere else for that matter.
