Hawaii is almost always a stop off point for subs in the pacific anyway due to its place as one of the worlds most favored paradises. Since we have a substantially large Navy base there and Sub crews need fair off the boat time, it is as good a place as any. Additionally, since it was the era of the cold war, the chances are even greater, San Diego is several additional days away from the action should there be an emergency, so your chances are 95% that there was in fact Subs stationed there.
