My family and i are going on vacation to hawaii but we dont know what to do. Any suggestions?

pollo asked:

We will stay in Honolulu for 2 days and then go to Maui for 9 days. What are some of the major attractions in Maui.
Can you tell me like where i can find the activities?

Maui just got a new attraction called the zip line where you zip glide across a beautiful valley. Also you can go to the top of haleakalau which is the tallest mountain on Maui. Its beautiful up there.

See Haleakala Crater at sunrise–it’s really very special. Wear something warm–it’s cold up there! You can go to several boutique farms on the slopes of Haleakala–Alii Lavender Farm has gorgeous views and products are made locally from their lavender–the honey is great! Also, there is a goat farm and they make great goat cheese, and there’s a tour. Finally, there is Tedeschi Winery, where you can taste different local wines and buy them.

Outdoors, there is the Hawaii Nature Center in Iao Valley, and a cultural center next door. Walking through Lahaina Town is nice–they’ve kept the Whaling Days flavor along the waterfront. The Maui Ocean center features local ocean animals and gives you some background.

The diving at Molokini is great, need to go in early morning so you don’t burn up. Take plenty of sunblock and USE IT. The sun is VERY hot here. And the snorkeling is fabulous.

    My Honolulu recommendations:
    Hike up Diamond Head
    Visit the Honolulu Zoo
Watch the lighting of the Tiki tourches in Waikiki
Visit the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor
Tour the USS Missouri at Pearl Harbor
Tour the submarine USS Bowfin at Pearl Harbor
Shop at the swap meet at Aloha Stadium. You will find the best prices on your Hawaiian shirt and other merchandise there.
Go to the top of Aloha Tower, shop, and dine at the Aloha Tower Marketplace.
    Visit the Polynesian Cultural Center
    Tour the Dole Pineapple Plantation
Go to Sunset on the Beach for free Hawaiian entertainment and a free movie. There are food vendors there as well.
Eat and shop at the International Market.
Visit or stay at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Believe it or not, it was the tallest building in Honolulu for many years.
Enjoy a day at the beach.
Tour the island on the Bus. It’s one of the best ways to see the island.

    My Maui recommendations:
Spending time at the beach, snorkeling/SCUBA diving are great particularly at Molokini is great. The road to Hana is a great trip too, but leave early because it will take the entire day. You can get a guide from your hotel concierge.
One of the more unique things to do is to take a bike ride down Mt. Haleakala. Maui Mountain Riders or another similar service will pick you up at your hotel early in the morning and take you up to the summit of Mount Haleakala where you will watch the sunrise. Then, you’ll take a bike ride down the mountain and have breakfast at the end of the trip. This is a great experience, and I recommend it highly.
Old Lahaina Luau is the best in the islands.
    My restaurant recommendations:
Paia Fish Market at 100 Hana Hwy in Paia is a great place to dine. It’s rustic, the prices are reasonable, and the locals eat there.
Mamas Fish House along the Hana Highway is great. It’s pricey, but they have their own fishermen that catch the fish in the morning that will be served that day.
Cheeseburger in Paradise on Front St. in Lahaina is good.
They say Maui Mixed Plate in Lahaina is excellent and with reasonable prices, but we’ve never eaten there.

Since you are only going to be in Honolulu for 2 days, I would suggest sticking to the activities that are near Waikiki and Honolulu itself since otherwise you will spend most of the day driving. Hanauma Bay is good snorkeling, but since your time on Oahu is short, I would plan on seeing some good snorkeling spots on Maui instead. So, on Oahu, be sure you see the sunset from Waikiki, walk on the beach at night, and check out the shopping in Waikiki, because the shopping there is probably better than anything on Maui, really. Also, if you are into nightlife, check that out in Waikiki.

The best place to go on Maui depends entirely on what you are looking for. If you want a traditional “beach” experience, then the best spots are on the southwest and northwest coasts. Because the winds usually bring the rain in from the east, the western coasts of Maui are typically dry and sunny most of the time.

The southwest, west, and northwest coasts include a number of beaches and great snorkeling, as well as the attractions of Kihei, Maalaea (inc. the Maui Ocean Center Aquarium), Lahaina, and Kaanapali. Generally speaking, the most expensive places to stay are the resorts around Kapalua and Kaanapali, Lahaina can be more moderate, and Kihei is the most affordable. But there are exceptions to this general guideline.

Personally, I think the beaches are better the further north you go, but that is obviously a matter of preference. There are some good beaches (like Makena Beach) near Kihei, but the sand isn’t quite as nice as the ones up north.

While you are in Maui, be sure you experience Haleakala in the east-central area of the island inside Haleakala National Park. Haleakala is a dormant volcano with beautiful sunrises and exotic geology. Also no visit to Maui would be complete without a trip along the road past Hana town to Oheo Gulch on the eastern shore. This is an all day affair but is well worth your time. If you have time, I suggest the following as a good introductory itinerary to Maui:

    1. Arrive Maui p.m., get rental car, drive up to Kula on Haleakala. There are several places to stay up here, but the Kula lodge might be the best.
    2. See sunrise at Haleakala National Park. If your teenagers don’t want to see the sunrise, you can let them sleep in at the lodge, as you will be back from the mountain in time before you have to check out. But it really is amazing.
    3. Breakfast at Kula Lodge.
    4. Drive down to western side of island, check into condo near beach for remainder of stay.
    5. After a few days, do the drive on the Road to Hana.

If you want to, you can drive up Haleakala for the sunset instead of doing the sunrise thing, although the position of the sun isn’t always quite as good. This might work better for you though if you don’t have time to spend a night on the mountain.

This site has a lot of great information about Maui:

    Have fun!
