I’m going to Hawaii soon and was wondering what the best scuba spots are?

Bill D asked:

I will be flying into Honolulu. I want to see some sharks and lots of different kinds of fish. Where should I go?

If you were coming in the summer, I would tell you go to Shark’s Cove in Pupukea on the north shore, but the waves will be high in the winter, so I would recommend Hanauma Bay on the east side of the island. It is kind of crowded, but not so much so on the far side of the reef. It is a really beautiful bay. I don’t think you can count on running into a shark on your own, but there are numerous shark encounter” tours. I have never been so I can’t recommend one. But here is a link to one company. If you do a search, you will find quite a few places that advertise shark tours.

Call the local dive shops, they’ll tell you.
    Electric Beach is good.

Lots of different kind of fish . . . Hanauma bay Pretty safe dive. It is a fish sanctuary. Go beyond the reef. We usually came around and enter into the bay. If you are lucky, you might run into a big sea turtle. If grab its back shoulders, you can take a ride on it.

Lots of sharks . . . Mokuleia (People have been eaten there by the sharks. Definitely, not a dive without experience there.)

There are a lot of sharks in Kaneohe bay. I would not go diving there. We have fished for sharks there.

On maui, some catamaran tours take people out to molokini. You can dive in the crater there.

I have dived off the mokuluas and in the channel by bellows in the mornings. We mostly laid net back in some time ago. Usually a lot fish in the mornings, but you probably have to set up a tour. Not necessarily a good dive to see fish.

If you do set up a dive tour, the shop will most likely have some good ideas.
