Wills On Ice With A Twist
Your will is designed to help your loved ones manage the disposal of your estate when you’ve died. Whilst yours may be simple, here are one or two memorable ones.
Will’s With An Exceptional Twist
It seems prudent to make a will. The majority of us realize this, but actually doing it seems such a chore. How much consideration went in these “wills with a difference”?
Even the legendary magician and escape artist, Harry Houdini, couldn’t trick death. Having died from a burst appendix, one of his biggest shocks came with the will reading. His magicians equipment went to his former partner Theodore, who was also his brother. His magical powers didn’t work on the next section – his ample collection of scrolls on magic and the supernatural. He left these to the American Society for Psychical Research, but with the term that the research officer J Malcolm Bird, who additionally was the editor of their journal, stood down. They refused the terms the compilation passed to the Library of Congress.
The white rabbits that he used in his act left their hats and were divided around the children of friends. Continuing the strange style, his gave his spouse 10 words, which were a secret code, with the avowal that he would employ these words to reach her from the afterlife. Each year for ten years, following his death, she dutifully held séances, but Harry never made contact.
Rock and blues singer Janis Joplin had a brief but notable career. She wrote several rock anthems and four albums, including “To Love Somebody” and “Me and Bobby McGee”. After years of drug addiction, she passed away from an overdose, aged twenty seven. Two days prior to her demise in 1970 her cheap will the sum of $2,500 to sponsor an all night party at her favourite pub so that her friends could “get blasted after I’m gone.” It must have been some party – that was a sizable amount of cash back in 1970.
We’ve all heard of people that, randomly, donate all their money to the dogs’ home, much to the anger of their family. Lot’s of family rows begin when a will is read. As long as the person who made the will is of sound mind and not under duress, there is often little that can be done to contest such a decision.
Eccentricities aside, if you pass on without leaving a will, those who you would wish to inherit will not necessarily be the ones that do so. You could have a partner of many years, but if you’re not married or in a legal partnership, he or she won’t receive your money, in spite of your designs and promises. This can be upsetting when it’s not clearly understood and can cause terrible fiscal consequences.
The current way to get your will under way is to search online and find a wills online . However basic your aims are, it’s advisable to have the professionals to write it for you and you can be sure that you’re leaving things exactly how you would wish them to be.
