Stretch Marks And You

The fear of getting stretch marks can trouble any individual. Most people affiliate them with pregnancy, but stretch marks can also be caused by weightlifting, weight gain and sometimes puberty, things that can cause the epidermis to stretch more quickly than it is able to naturally.

If you already have striae you’re likely looking for a way to remove stretch marks. While getting rid of them altogether is difficult unless you have a surgical procedure, it is possible to reduce the look of them.

There are a variety of skin treatments that can help reduce the appearance, like laser therapy or micro dermabrasion. Some turn to more invasive surgeries like a tummy tuck, which is more common after pregnancy or weight loss. But there are less aggressive treatments as well, the most common of which is using a good stretch mark cream. The most important thing to know when applying a stretch mark cream is that the cream must be applied every single day for a a few months for it to reduce their appearance.

Stretch marks may be particularly challenging during maternity because the body is already going through so many changes. Gaining weight itself is trying for many women and there is of course the stress of losing that pregnancy weight quickly after the pregnancy as well. Despite that it is necessary to gain the right amount of weight for the health of the baby. Women who don’t gain enough weight have a higher risk of having an underweight or premature baby. But putting on too many pounds can cause other health issues like varicose veins, backaches, and high blood pressure. Gaining too much weight can also cause a higher probability of getting stretch marks, and creating more difficulty losing the extra weight after the the birth of the baby.

If you are afraid of getting stretch marks, whether during maternity or before starting a weightlifting routine, your best defense is prevention. It’s best to think ahead and use a good cream for stretch mark prevention. Keeping them from forming is more effective than trying to remove them after they have already appeared.
